Summer Teen Workshops @ The Adult School
This year’s program will take place at Columbia High School for teens ages 13 - 17 years old. Take one, or all of our workshops, in small group settings for personalized instruction. Teens will gain valuable hands-on experience in photography, film, art and acting.

In this immersive two-week workshop, our students will learn how to generate ideas for their films, be introduced to the fundamentals of filmmaking including: shot composition, camera angle, shooting, and sound. This course will have an emphasis on creating short films and our filmmakers will discover how to bring their ideas to life. This is an excellent class for students who want to test the filmmaking waters as well as for learners who want to gain practical skills to prepare for college.
Our filmmakers will work in small groups, be very hands-on and use professional-quality equipment. If interested in continuing the filmmaking experience, they can pick up where they left off, and enroll in a second two-week session offered the following week.
Students are to bring lunch.
CLAY LAB WORKSHOP - Instructor Simone Anthony-Brown
JULY 6 - JULY 9, 9:30am - 12:30pm (4 sessions), Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs
In this four-day pottery workshop, teens will create one finished air-dry clay project each day using hand-building techniques such as slab building, coil work, carving, and texture design. Projects are designed to be completed within the session and taken home daily. Students will explore form, function, and personal style while learning practical clay skills and creative finishing techniques.

STUDIO REMIX: MIXED MEDIA + ACRYLIC PAINTING - Instructor Simone Anthony-Brown
JULY 13 - JULY 16, 9:30am-12:30pm, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs (4 sessions)
This four day teen workshop blends mixed meia collage and scrylic painting into bold, modern artwork. Students will complete one finished peice each day while learning composition, layering, color mixing, mark-making, and ways to combine paper elements with paint.

PHOTOGRAPHY - Instructor Richard Cutrona

Step into the timeless world of film photography! In this immersive two week workshop, students will learn how to use 35mm film cameras, develop their own negatives, and create striking black-and-white prints in a traditional darkroom. From loading film to understanding exposure, our students will explore photography as a powerful form of self-expression.
No prior experience is required — just curiosity and a willingness to learn!
WRITING: THE NON-INTENSE WRITING INTENSIVE FOR TEENS - Instructor Marcia Lebeau
JULY 13 - JULY 16, 9am-12pm, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs (4 sessions)
Want to work on your creative writing this summer and have fun, too? During our four mornings together, we’ll explore poetry, short story, and memoir. Using prompts, inspiring examples, and even writing games, we’ll dig deep so you can surprise yourself with what you come up with and leave with new pieces and some writing tools for going forward. This workshop is for students who want to expand the possibilities of their writing, whether they’ve just discovered creative writing or have been doing it for years.
MUSIC: SONGWRITING INTENSIVE - Instructor Emily Vite
JULY 6 - JULY 17, 9:30am-2:30pm, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri (10 sessions)
This two-week workshop is for students looking to immerse themselves in the craft of songwriting and music production. Students will workshop lyrics, melodies, and chord progressions, gain experience using a variety of musical instruments, expand their theory skills, and learn how to record and produce original work. This course will take place in the newly renovated Music Technology Lab at CHS (A239). Access to Mac computers, a variety of DAWs, audio interfaces, microphones, guitars, MIDI keyboards, and sample machines will be provided. Students are also welcome to bring any personal instruments from home.

AUDITION SKILLS FOR YOUNG ACTORS - Instructor Kelly Murphy
AUGUST 3 - AUGUST 7, 10am-2pm, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri (5 sessions)
Ready to shine at your next audition? This one-week program is designed for middle school and early high school students who want to build confidence and strengthen their performance skills. Students will work on comedic and dramatic monologues, explore improv and character development, and gain insight into what directors look for. By the end of the week, participants will walk away with polished material, practical audition techniques, and the confidence to take the stage..
